Solana Center Mid-Scale Composting Demonstration Site, Delmar, CA

Solana Center educators will guide a tour of working displays of mid-scale composting solutions for use on-site by food-generating entities to manage their organics. The site is located at the Infield Farm of the world-renowned Del Mar Fairgrounds. Solana Center defines mid-scale as less than that which would require permitting (over 100 cubic yards of materials on-site). 

Displays include
• Vermicomposting: 30-foot mechanized through-flow bin
• Aerated Static Piles: 8-cy and 10-cy wooden bins designed by O2 Compost
• In-Vessel: 1.4-cy Green Mountain Technologies Earth Cube, with solar-powered aeration
• Dual-Chambered Tumbler: 3-cy tumbler for traditional composting
• Bokashi Pretreatment System: food scraps with bokashi-inoculated bran in 5-gallon bucket with airtight lid

 

Miramar Landfill Biogas Recovery And Renewable Power Generation, San Diego, CA

The Miramar Landfill in San Diego is comprised of three separate areas: North Miramar (closed), South Miramar (inactive) and West Miramar (active), totaling about 1,410 acres of which 476 acres are dedicated to active landfilling operations.  The landfill gas (LFG) to energy system draws LFG from North Miramar and West Miramar and transports it to a bank of three (double engine) generator sets producing 9.6 MW of electricity at the Metropolitan Biosolids Center (MBC). The MBC utilizes 6.4 MW, and 3.2 MW goes to the Marine Corps Air Station Mirimar. LFG from the Miramar Landfill is also piped to the North City Water Reclamation Plant where another five (single engine) generator sets produce 5.4 MW for the plant's power needs.
