Compost & Digestate Volumes Are Increasing —
Are California Markets Ready?

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Organized by BioCycle and R. Alexander Associates, Inc.

Scope: Recent laws enacted in California are driving organic waste streams from disposal to recycling. These feedstocks include green waste, food waste, uncontaminated wood and biosolids. This full-day BioCycle WEST COAST18 Preconference Workshop outlines current and projected California markets for, and volumes of, compost, digestate and mulch, then identifies and frames "actionable" policies, regulations, research, market incentives and product development that workshop attendees can utilize in their own market research and development, policy making and business decisions.

Morning

  • Gather "intel" on current and future markets and volumes/types of compost and digestate produced.
  • Evaluate existing markets in terms of maturity and saturation, and how that informs potential markets.
  • Evaluate existing compost, digestate and mulch products — based on types and quality — to assess "match" to existing markets.
  • Inventory current policies, regulations and incentives that impact compost and digestate markets.
  • Group discussion to identify market-limiting gaps

Afternoon

  • Breakout group discussions to address market-limiting gaps
  • Suggested "market-limiting" discussion topics include: Product quality and contamination; Research—agricultural and nonagricultural, including storm water, erosion control and carbon sequestration; Market demand; Regulatory requirements
  • Breakout group report outs
  • Discuss and rank final actionable workshop deliverables
